Reading Review

The Key & The Tower - Simon Toyne

These were the second and last books from the Sanctus trilogy. I originally picked these books up because they looked like the kind of book I usually read - adventure with a bit of history thrown in. On that front, I wasn't disappointed.

It was quite a page turner that kept me guessing throughout. The religious side was more extreme and required some suspension of belief.

On the whole a good read that I would definitely pass on.

The Whitstable Pearl Mystery - Julie Wassmer

I came across this book because Julie is a friend of the family. I read her story a few years ago and we stayed at her holiday home in Whitstable for Nico's 30th so I was keen to see what her new book was all about.

It's a really nice detective story set in the coastal town. As well as keeping you turning those pages to find out 'whodunnit', Julie really sets the scene and gives the reader lots of background about the area without being overbearing.

I really enjoyed the story and the characters and I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series later this year.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle

This is the latest from the classics list which I am still working my way through. I was keen to read it as I like the many adaptations which have been coming out lately and was keen to compare.

I was disappointed at first when the cases seemed so easy that I could figure them out but I kept going and the more difficult they became, the more I enjoyed it.

The magic of the book is in trying to figure out the complicated cases only to be pipped to the post by Sherlock and is inevitably simple explanation.

I was surprised to see how many Sherlock Holmes books Conan Doyle wrote, but I look forward to reading more of them.

Make It Monday - May Birthday Cards

In a rare moment of creativity while looking through my stock, I remembered my star cutter and made some 3D pop-outs with some of my pretty card stock - prettier than this photo makes it look.

I like the new, clean, different feel of it. It seems a bit better than the washi tape.

It's also something I can adapt for boys or Christmas cards depending on the card stock. So May is off to a good start creatively!

Project Life - May

I really enjoyed this project again this month. It broke down quite nicely into sections and even though it felt like a quiet month, there's a lot in there.

Above is the first page with the usual typed journaling and calendar card. I like the colours on this page and used it to add some other little bits in like an update on my 30 things list and a note on Nico's tomatoes.
It turns out we do a lot of eating, cooking and baking around here. I managed to get a whole page out of our culinary creations from the last month.

I also put in an extra square spread about my creative endeavours in May. You can see it on the right above and the left below.
The rest of the above page covers the quilt and preparing for the baby. I also put a bit of material from the quilt in there.
Finally, I added a spread about mum's visit and our trips out. Again, I love the way the colours work together and I had the chance to use some new cardstock.

The next month may be a little longer in the making but I will be keeping up to it at some point.

May Birthdays

Mayday was a quiet but productive day around here. I got lots ticked off my lists including the birthday cards for this month.

I used some of the new materials again and played around with layers and names. I'm planning on searching out a little more card stock before next month so that I can work on better cards for men again.

May Goals Review

Well it is that time of the month again, I really don't know where this month has gone.

As usual my weightloss goal has been the bottom of my priorities with everything else going on.  I'm planning on refocusing myself on this aspect of my life next month. More about that on Sunday.

The florist and the hairdresser are booked!  I even have some ideas of what I would like my hair to be like on the big day so that is progress!!  Still lots to do for the wedding but we have achieved a lot this month and things are really coming along.

I completed two craft projects this month with the sewn owl and my knitted scarf.  I was really pleased with both projects.

I completely forgot about my no extra spending rule and went and ordered some games for work as well as more books on 2nd May.  However, I have been good since then, only buying food, birthday presents for other people and wedding things.  I figured, if I wait until 2nd June to buy anything else, I have managed a month!

Overall, really pleased with the month.  Onwards and upwards for June!
