The Harz Trip - Part 1, the Journey and Goslar

We set off to Altenau last Wednesday nice and early and with a beautiful blue sky and glorious sunshine.

The train was surprisingly easy to navigate with just one change in Hannover.  Goslar is a beautiful old town that is very typically German.  The old buildings can be found in many cities but so many and the rolling green scenery in which it is situated, make it really special.  We wandered through the streets.

We visited this old building which used to serve as a kind of hospice for the sick and elderly.  It now houses little shops and galleries and is worth a visit for anyone in the town.

We also walked up to the Kaiserpfaly where the German emperors used to live and afterwards had a lovely lunch outdoors at a little Greek place.

Afterwards, we took the bus to get to Altenau.  This was the only low point of the day as we had to change and after waiting thirty minutes for a bus which only runs every hour, the driver barely stopped and left us standing there, luggage and all at the stop so we had to wait another hour and make sure we moved a lot quicker for the next bus.  Luckily, it wasn't too late when we arrived in Altenau so we could still stock up at the supermarket before the hike up to our little cabin in the hills.

Nico quickly got a fire going in the log burner and we settled in with our books, dinner and wine for a lovely first evening.
