Happy Holidays

Today we are heading away for the holidays - two weeks with our families.

I won't be posting regularly so here I am signing off for the holidays.

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy 2014.

See you on the other side!

A History of Scotland

In my latest spurt of reading I have almost devoured this work over the weekend.  I've always had an interest in history and I bought this just after we got back from our honeymoon in Scotland as I was sure there was a lot I could learn.  Part of my family history also stems back to Scotland so it's that little bit more special than some of the areas of history I have studied.

There were two things I loved about this book.  The first was how much in sounded like Game of Thrones.  Normally, I find this kind of writing very heavy and hard to get through but this one was so well written and the content itself is so interesting that it was like reading a work of fiction and therefore, the history seemed all the more amazing.

The second, slightly more geeky aspect was how interconnected history is.  Everything I studied at school - the Tudors and the Civil War -, sixth form - the American Revolution and industrialisation -, and university - medieval Europe and Spanish history -; it's all in there even though the focus is always unmistakably Scottish.  It just goes to show what a huge and amazing history that country has - despite its size!

It's not a book I would recommend to everyone.  You have to be really into history and/or Scotland, but for those that are, this is a great read.  I'm really looking forward to finishing it this tomorrow.

The Saturday Update

It's been a fairly quiet week around here.  We had a busy weekend visiting family with family and then saying goodbye to our guests on Tuesday after a final visit to the Christmas markets.

After that it was a short week at work and since we finished, I've been getting caught up on all the little things around the flat - washing, letter writing, project life etc.

I've been going crazy on the reading, I finished Catch 22 on Thursday and read A Christmas Carol the same day.  On Friday I read another novel and I am already a third of the way through a History of Scotland which has been sat on my bookshelf ever since we were on honeymoon there.  I thought it was going to be a bit dry but actually it reminds me a lot of the Game of Thrones!

This weekend we are heading to the markets again with Nico's aunt and getting the final bits done before Christmas week - online check in, wrapping the last presents, packing...

I'm already feeling nice and relaxed and really looking forward to these two weeks.  Just what this time of year should be about!

Reading Goal - achieved!

I've just finished reading my latest Dickens novel - it seemed appropriate at the moment.  In fact, I read it in a day - very good...and short!

Completing the book completed my goal for the year of reading one regular book, one classic and one German book every month.

It's been nice to get into more German this year, I am getting faster with them too.

So, thirty-six books later I have decided not to carry on with this goal next year, instead I am repeating the previous one of reading all the books I have before I buy any more!  That may well keep me going until next Christmas!

Project Life - Week 37

This week was a nice mix of photos and journalling.  It was a busy week with Mum and Doug's visit so there is a lot in there.  I like that the colours match even though they are not very Christmassy.  Overall I am more pleased with this week's spread.

Family Visit

Mum and Doug left this morning.  They had been here since Thursday and we had a great long weekend shopping, playing games and visiting the Christmas market.  Here are some snapshots from the visit.

Settlers of Catan

This weekend with our visitors we finally had chance to finish not one, but two games of Catan - one with the extension pack which we have never managed before.  We are even thinking of cracking out the second extension pack while they are here!  We haven't even opened that one ourselves yet!

It's a great game that is really big here in Germany (but also available in England) but you need four players so we don't often get chance to play.  Even our visitors needed a little bit of convincing but really got into the game in the end.

Project Life - Week 36

Another quiet week on the photo front as you can see from all the journalling.  Luckily there was plenty to write about in this busy week.  I tried to tie the colours in but I am looking forward to using a new kit in the new year as the Christmas reds don't always work well with the lovely hot pinks in this kit.

Looking forward to having more photos next week and then it's not long until I start a new 2014 album.  I started this album when I turned 28 and planned to continue it for a year but it is getting quite packed and I think the new year will be a good crossover point.

The Saturday Update

So after a nice relaxed weekend last weekend, it has been something of a mad week but it has flown by - just ten days to Christmas!

On Monday we had an unofficial colleague Christmas get together at the Christmas Market in Bremen as I won't be at the official one this week.  We were also celebrating for a colleague whose trial period is over for her promotion so that was extra nice.

Tuesday was a long day at work with meetings and a load of marking to get through but it is all done now and things are winding down for the holidays so that is good!

As usual I had my evening classes on Wednesday and we arranged to have class at the market next week so I must organise that still but it won't be as late a finish as usual which is nice because I had to have an afternoon nap this week - I feel like an old woman!

On Thursday our guests arrived and we had a lovely meal - thank you Nico - and a relaxed night before the busy weekend.

On Friday I met mum after work and we went for lunch at the Christmas market and did some clothes shopping in the afternoon.  It's the first time I have bought new clothes in ages and it was time so I'm pleased we did that.  Then we had dinner at our favourite Persian restaurant - Apadana - it was delicious and filling and we were all glad we went and glad to walk off the meal later and enjoy the views from the river.

This weekend we are doing a little more shopping, baking, game playing and visiting the in-laws so it will be busy but not too busy and of course next week is the last week at work already!  Good times!

Feliz Navidad

So it's all working again and here's a new favourite of mine combining three of my favourites at the moment - Christmas, Spanish and Michael Buble!!

The countdown is on...

So me telling you what I haven't done lately is getting a bit boring.  What I have been doing a lot of is preparing for Christmas both in school and at home.  My videos aren't working this morning so that will have to be a treat for later in the week.

For now, here is one (last - I promise) link to the countdown that has been keeping me going and is starting to get exciting.  I've got it set as my homepage at the moment.  Get in the Christmas spirit!

Over the next week or so, as well as a video or two there will be Christmas market photos and more so if you are something of a Scrooge I would tune out now...

Foodie Links

Along with getting behind on my crafts lately (read, taking a break for the holidays), I haven't been cooking or baking much either so this week I thought I would share some of my favourite foodie websites with you.

So get surfing and find something you like!

Bremen Christmas Market

source
Last night was the first of what will hopefully be several visits to the Bremen Christmas Market for me this year.  Unfortunately I won't be able to make work's Christmas meal next week so I made a special effort despite the miserable weather yesterday and headed into town with some colleagues after work.

One colleague really did have to convince me to go despite the rain but in the end I was glad she did as the rain had all but stopped and it had put off the crowds so that it was quite comfy to wander around for once!

We had a punch and a nice chinhwag - always good to see colleagues outside of school too.  I was home for seven as it was a school night but my first visit was thoroughly enjoyed - here's to lots more!

Craft Corner: A Christmas Link

It has been quiet here on the craft front since finishing the cards last week.  I received a little inspiration today do from this website and if I find some time to work on it this week, I will post on it next week.  Have a look for yourself in the meantime.

Project Life - Week 35

This week is full and festive with all the decorations we've been putting up and cards we've been sending out now that December has arrived.  That meant lots of photos.  There's also a nice dinner in there and a photo with some journalling on our engagement anniversary which we celebrated last Thursday.

I really like the look and the little injection of colour that Christmas brought to the project this week.

The Saturday Update

This week has flown by again.  We got the decorations up last weekend and I'm almost back up to date on the to-do lists.

Work was normal Monday to Wednesday with our big meeting on Tuesday.  Things feel a little bit more festive there too.  It's really nice to feel part of a team there.

I stopped cycling this week.  I am being extra careful this Winter and the weather has dropped to such an extent that it is only a matter of time until it gets icy and dangerous on the bike.  Speaking of the weather, we were hit quite heavily by the gales that have been making their way through Europe so I was glad not to be on the bike.  School closed early on Thursday and lessons were cancelled on Friday.  It started snowing yesterday too so it was especially festive here.

I caught up with family on the phone and continued planning our trip back to England to see as many people as possible while we are back.  I'm really looking forward to it all.  Just two more weeks of work!  And they will be very festive with a visit from Mum and Doug, a colleague outing to the xmas market and taking some classes for a special xmas meeting.

Next week, I hope to catch up on my reading and get the flat in order for our visitors on Thursday.  Have a good one!

More Christmas Decorations!

Following on from our tree, we decorated the whole flat last weekend and here are some more shots of our decorations.
This is my new purchase for the year.  I love it!
One thing about being part of a German family now - they buy us lovely gifts for different seasons (Christmas, Easter...) and we save them for the year after so it is like Christmas when we decorate and get to open all the new things we forgot about.  This Santa is one of them.  I love it.
Of course, out come the candles and the smoker man for the insence.  I love the smells of Christmas as well as how the flat looks.  We're feeling festive around here!

Christmas Decorations

At the weekend, we got all our Christmas decorations up and now that the cards are all sents and the presents are all bought, the stress is off and it's time to really enjoy it.  I love this season.  I love how cozy the flat feels with twinkling lights and lots of red everywhere.  As you can see, I'm not the only one enjoying it.  I'll share some more later this week.  Also, looking forward to several planned trips to the Christmas markets!!

Project Life - Week 34

This week was very quiet on the photo front again but I did miss a couple of big birthdays in England this week and my stepdad sent me some photos of the celebrations so I included them and I'm really pleased with the results.

It's not something I would do every week but it just fit this week.  Next week will be back in Bremen with the start of the Christmas celebrations.

Craft Corner: Origami Christmas Tree

This was the first of my Christmas projects this year.  Last week, I popped into Idee for some paper and found the perfect green and white combination for these trees.

I finished the first one in half an hour.  The last bit is a bit fiddly but otherwise it is very straight forward and I am really pleased with the results.

You can find the instructions here.

The Saturday Update

After our quiet weekend of getting things back to normal around the flat, it was also a regular work week.

It was nice to get back into a routine.  I also made a couple of trips into town to get Christmas decorations and a few other bits and bobs ready for this weekend - the first Advent already!!

The Christmas market started on Thursday - the stalls have been set up all week so it's a bit chaotic but nice and festive in preparation for our next family visit.

Also, on Friday I went to a training course at the evening school where I work.  It had been ages since the last one so it was good to catch up with colleagues and learn about Cuisenaire rods.

I've been a bit tired but better than last week.  Outside of work we have mainly been hibernating in the flat and catching up on our series'.  I feel much more on top of things than last week though so that is good.

This weekend will be about getting the flat decorated and getting my Christmas cards made and sent.

Project Life - Week 33

This week was our visit from Dad and Gran so there are lots of photos again and just a little bit of journalling.  It was a really good week.

November Goals Review

I did learn to crochet and plan to do some more crochet projects next year.

I wrote three letters, Skyped and hosted a visit so it was a very social month.

I am all but ready for Christmas.  The presents are bought, the flights are booked, I just need to get the cards done and decorations up this weekend.

I did make it out of the flat every day this month!  That was already an improvement on last month!

This final goal is starting to haunt me.  I'm pushing it to the new year because there is no way I will get it done in December!

Winter Garden

Okay, so we don't have a garden in the traditional sense but every year since we moved, we have been building up our little balcony gardens and while Nico is becoming somewhat of a whizz - and providing us with lots of tasty veggies for the kitchen, I can kill a plant just by looking at it.

When we got married this year, we were given a lovely rose bush as a gift and as it means a lot to us, we have been researching how to keep it alive this winter.  It turns out that it just needs protection from the sun so we used this hessian to wrap around it this weekend now that the frost is really setting in.  I hope it works!

Craft Corner: Link Up

Lately I haven't had enough time to rest, let alone focus on a new project so this week I thought I would share some of my favourite craft links from around the net with you.

Some gorgeous designs for inspiration when I get around to taking this course next year.

Something new for me.

Very useful as I plan to do more of this next year too.

And even more Project Life inspiration as well as many other craft ideas.

I hope you find them as useful as I do!

Birthday Wishes

So today a very important lady in my life turns ninety!  It's difficult to find words to express what an achievement that is.  I wrote about her for her eighty-eighth birthday and all of that still applies.  She has two great grandchildren now and has travelled to Germany twice this year - not bad!

If she achieves half as much in the next decade she will be one lucky lady - moreover, we will be incredibly lucky, as we are right now to have her here.  She has her ups and downs, like the rest of us but really, we wouldn't have her any other way.

While looking for words to express the sentiment today, I came across this poem and it seemed to fit perfectly...

Birthday Blessings

Instead of counting candles,
Or tallying the years,
Contemplate your blessings now,
As your birthday nears.

Consider special people
Who love you, and who care,
And others who’ve enriched your life
Just by being there.

Think about the memories
Passing years can never mar,
Experiences great and small
That have made you who you are.

Another year is a happy gift,
So cut your cake, and say,
"Instead of counting birthdays,
I count blessings every day!"

 Happy Birthday Grandma!

The Saturday Update

What...a...week.  I know I have worried some people with my lack of updates this week - I apologise for that but it has been totally manic around here...

We had our visitors last weekend until Tuesday morning so on Monday I met them in town after work for some tea and cake (an English German compromise).  It was great to have them here and especially to see my Gran eating so much and generally enjoying herself.

On Tuesday and Wednesday I had parent teacher meetings at school so they were two very long days and along with my Wednesday evening classes, I was totally wiped out.

Thurday was our annual Autumn market at school so it was another long day with a late finish but our class did very well, making a small profit and almost selling out this year.

Friday was back to normal but I am still working on all the usual little jobs like washing and cleaning and getting us back on an even keel around here.

There are various mini projects waiting to be done like those Christmas cards and getting my old clothes listed online but this weekend is going to be about relaxing first and foremost before another long (but not as long) week.

Tomorrow I am having a catch up with my best friend after many weeks so I am looking forward to that, I'll also be ringing Gran with birthday wishes and then it will be back to work.  For now, we are getting stuck into series seven of Bones.

P.S. Made me laugh.

Games Review

With Gran's visit last weekend we cracked out the dominoes again and Nico was even inspired to buy a new, extra large set.  Gran is an absolute domino shark - you have never seen a grandma get so excited and power crazy over a game!

We also cracked out another game that was a first for the English in the group.  It's called Pi Mal Daumen which is all about guessing numbers.  The questions all have numbers for answers and you don't have to get them spot on to get points.  It even gave Dad the chance to practise his German and we had great fun.

Autumn Market

Today is our annual Autumn Market at school.  This year, like last, our class is making and selling these lovely wooden angels.  I bought one last year and will be unpacking it again for the first advent next weekend.  I can't wait!

Family Visit

With the town musicians
Last weekend we had my Dad and Gran to stay.  The trip was a birthday present for my Gran who turns ninety on Sunday!  She seemed ti really enjoy herself and we loved having her here.

Here are some snaps from our trip into Bremen on Monday.

Craft Corner: Chunky Knitted Scarf

So the picture above is an old one.  I spent this week creating a warmer, maroon version for Christmas but as it is for someone who regularly reads the blog, I don't want to spoil the surprise.

The pattern came from Craftsy - well worth a browse for inspiration for knitters of all levels out there.

Project Life - Week 32

Another update this week as I got a little behind last week.

A lot of journalling again, but again I didn't mind it too much this week - there was a lot to tell and a few more photos to balance things out.

Next week should be much more photo based again due to our family visitors!

The Saturday Update

Phew, what a week!  Well, it was my first full week back at work since some time in September and I really felt it.  The good thing was that it flew by and I slept better because I was so tired.

We had a nice quiet weekend before the chaos so I was ready for it.

On Tuesday we went on a training course through the teacher' union which was informative and inspired me to get on with work and my colleagues again this week.

There was a lot of cycling and I finally started wearing my helmet again - the news out of London was also an eye opener.

I received some more positive feedback from my evening class on Wednesday which always makes that extra shift of the week worth it.

So now it is weekend.  This morning we are cleaning and tidying like crazy people ready for the arrival of my Dad and Gran later this afternoon.  I'm so excited as it's my Gran's first visit to our home and it's been a while since Dad's last visit too.  They are staying until Tuesday so we'll have a nice long weekend together and be able to celebrate Gran reaching the big 9 - 0 next week!

Project Life - Week 31

Better late than never, here's my week 31 update.  It was another very quiet week but I was pleased with the journalling this week, I felt like I had a little more to say and wasn't just forcing it.

Gone Girl

source
I finished this book over the weekend.  It was one of those that I just couldn't put down.

It's a thriller with an interesting twist.  The novel tells the story of a woman who disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary and is told from the points of view of both her and her husband.

This one had some really unexpected twists and kept me guessing right up until the end.  I don't want to write much more because I don't want to give away the story but I highly recommend this book!

Also I can't wait for the film next year with some top actors.

Gratitude

Reading one of my favourite blogs lately reminded me that it's all too easy to get down and forget to count our blessings at this time of year so today I wanted to count some of the things I am feeling grateful for at the moment.

  • My health
  • My wonderful, patient husband
  • My family :-) (and their upcoming visits)
  • That I have a job I love
  • Cycling
  • Our new heater
  • My friends and colleagues
  • That I live in a relatively safe and stable country
  • Internet shopping
  • That Christmas is coming!

Craft Corner: November Cards

Here's this month's batch of birthday cards.  All very different this time and I really enjoyed that.  I also experimented with some new techniques including a little bit of calligraphy.

Next on the list - Christmas cards!

Snail Mail

The first thing I do most mornings is to check my email - reply, act upon, or delete them and then get on with my day.

I still believe, however, that nothing can beat good old snail mail.  I had a penpal throughout my childhood and loved nothing more than receiving a letter in the post.

Today I have another penpal in America and I regularly write to friends and family to keep in touch.  Sometimes, I think I do end up repeating myself as I don't always remember what went into the last letter but it's still a great way to keep in touch and learn new things.

It's also always nice to see a lovely handwritten envelope in the box rather than the usual printed bank notices and official letters.

The Saturday Update

Well, another week has flown by.  Yesterday was the first day back at work after a few quiet days off so excuse the missing post.  I'm working on bringing you a Project Life update soon.

Christmas preparations are underway, I've made a start on the shopping and today I hope to get onto the cards while Nico makes the first big mince pie.  Other than that we are having a quiet weekend before it all kicks off in the next weeks.  Next week will be my first full week back at work since September and then my Dad and Gran are coming to visit next weekend.  All things Christmas are starting to kick off at work too as well as the usual chaos of parents evenings and reports that don't really brighten these dark days but do make them go faster!

I'm currently flying through a new book called 'Gone Girl'.  I'd definitely recommend it - a crime thriller with a twist.  I may go into more detail when I finish, but now I must go and turn some more pages...!

P.S. Interesting and useful and putting this on my wishlist for a future house.

Christmas is Coming!

I refused to acknowledge this fact properly until November this year.  I have refrained from buying up decorations yet but I have made a little start on presents and cards.

I like to make my own cards and visiting Idee was inspirational so there will be more on that in the coming weeks.

I also saw some great decorations and I just can't wait for December to start trimming the place up on the first Advent.  Speaking of which I am keeping my eyes peeled for an advent wreath again, haven't seen any yet but we did get our advent calendars at the Hachez outlet.

On the gift front I have started my shopping.  Living away from home and travelling with Ryanair is not ideal for getting those gifts back with us so I love online shopping and getting things delivered to family to hand out when we get back.  Some of my favourtie websites for online shopping are:

This year we'll be in Germany for Xmas with Nico's family before flying back to celebrate with friends and family in England.  I am sooo looking forward to it.  In fact I am looking forward to the whole season with the Christmas markets and the school festivities - I still haven't quite decided which classes are going to have the Xmas film Elf inflicted on them yet but it will happen.

So be ready for lots of Xmas updates in the next few weeks, I hope you don't get bored!

Driving in Bremen

On Sunday, I took my friend for a driving lesson.

Bremen has a special driving practice centre where you can hire dual control cars by the hour or take your own to practice.

I'd been a little worried about them accepting my English license but in the end they didn't even check it - just took our signatures for the insurance and handed over the keys.

My biggest shock was the hill that we had to drive up to access the grounds.  I hadn't expected to drive myself (especially as I have limited experience with a left hand drive) but was told that I had to drive up there and then swap with my friend.

I was also surprised my how hilly the grounds themselves were.  It's something that I always forget in my time away from England because Bremen just does not have hills.

So even though my friend has had several lessons before, the hills and getting used to the new car made the experience a little more nerve testing than I had expected but we both got used to it and I got back in one piece.

It did make me appreciate driving instructors much more and the first thing I said to Nico on my return - "We are never teaching our own ids to drive."

Craft Corner: Crochet

While in my favourite craft shop last week, I discovered a cute little crochet learner kit and snapped it up as it's something I've wanted to do for a while.

It wasn't very easy to follow but with the help of a handy you tube video I completed this project over the weekend - it's a pan holder.  It's not perfect but it's not a bad first attempt either.

I am looking forward to trying some more projects once I get Christmas presents out of the way.

Project Life - Week 30

Despite my promises to myself last week, I didn't take many more photos this week so there is a lot of journaling again and I am not overly pleased with the look as it's not really pulled together but on the positive side, the week is well documented and I am looking forward to the next week and getting more in there.

The Saturday Update

Another mixed up week this week with a bit more time off.  I'm feeling better than last week though and I've been a little more productive in starting on those November goals already with a little crochet project and getting some more Christmas shopping done.

I'm planning to start on the Christmas cards this weekend and tomorrow I am taking my friend out for a driving lesson!  Should be fun.

It is well and truly November now with miserable weather and the heating back on so I'm trying to focus on all those good winter things like hot drinks, candles and crafting.

Just a short one again this week - hopefully more to report next week!

October Goals Review

This was my least productive month in a while as far as goals go.

The running didn't really take off, but I'm not entirely giving up on that.

I did get those Project Life inserts done - two for our wedding and one for our trip to Denmark.

Those clothes are still sat in a box here, I'm still trying to get around to it.

I did write two letters.  It was nice to get in touch with an old friend that way too.

I completed a little lilac owl for my best friend's baby for Christmas and have lots more in mind for the sewing machine this winter.

It wasn't a complete wash out but I am excited to get going next month.

Recipe: Asparagus Quiche

Ingredients:

  • 50g rice flour
  • 50g cornflour
  • 50g butter
  • 4-5tbsp water
  • 200g fromage frais
  • 2 eggs
  • 100g asparagus
  • 15g parmesan cheese
  • seasoning
Instructions:

  1. Place the flour in a bowl and rub in the butter.
  2. Add the water, roll into a boll of dough and allow to rest in cling film for thirty minutes.
  3.  Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and grease a 20cm tin.
  4. Roll out the pastry and use it to line the tin.  Use your fingers to press the patry into place where necessary.
  5. In a bowl mix together the fromage frais, eggs, asparagus and seasoning.  Pour into the tin.
  6. Sprinkle over the parmesan cheese and cook for 25 minutes or until golden.
We often change up the filling in this recipe, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, the possibilities are endless!

Linky Link Up

Today I thought I would share some of my favourite links from around the web at the moment.  For my all time favourite blogs, you can read the list on the right hand side and see when they were last updated too but here are some more general ones.

A great language learning resource which I recommend to my classes too.

Another brilliant tutor from the Project Life course I took.

Craft Corner: Innocent Hats

A couple of weeks ago my mum put me onto this little project.  Innocent smoothies are doing a special offer over Christmas where you buy a smoothie with a little winter hat on it and they make a donation to charities which help the elderly through winter.  Of course they need people to knit the little hats to go on the smoothies.

I put these two together that weekend and learnt for the first time how to make a pompom!  I was very pleased with myself.  Unfortunately the first one I made was way too big for the little hats so it's just hanging around the flat until I find a use for it but I was pleased with these too.

Their website has a whole host of different designs, most of which were well out of my reach but I did these two in the beginners level 'doddle' pattern and had them done in no time as well.

It's a little late to send them in now as the deadline is 31st October, but I am sure they will repeat the project next year, plus I then discovered that they are running the same project here in Germany with a 1st December deadline!  So I may even manage a couple more by then!
